Landscape

In the west, stories from the Buddha’s previous lives (jātaka tales) are composed as continuous narratives. From left to right, selected episodes from the Recompense Sutra (大方便佛報恩經. T.3, no.156) revolve around four large buddhas and are situated in natural landscapes and vernacular architecture. Together, they amount to an expanding panorama of the boundless universe (Daqian shijie 大千世界) captured in the architectonic form of a long handscroll.
